Nirvana(the band for which Curt sang) played Grunge which is categorized under Alternative Rock - a genre of rock and metal - which deviates fans from the themes and music of mainstream rock. Grunge rockers, especially Nirvana, talk to us about depression and the darker side of life. Their music is accompanies their themes and is normally distorted.

Nirvana combined elements of metal with the industrial sound which was starting to become popular in the early 90s. Their songs had distinct riffs and bass-lines which made them popular. Their guitar solos too, were much different from the solos played by mainstream rockers like GnR, Bonjovi or Aerosmith.
