YES!!! My local university did away with it's Indian mascot a few years ago due to the NCAA rulings. There was a lot of protest from local indian groups as well as everyone to KEEP the Indian as the mascot. Many people felt it honored the native americans of our area and their history. It was sad to see it go. For my local university, the Indian mascot was used very respectfully. They didn't have a man dressed in a costume. It was mainly used as a name for the team and in logos. My local area is rich in native american history and the Indian mascot was adopted for that reason many years ago.

Stupid no. In the case of Florida State the indian tribes involved voted to let Florida State keep the use of the Seminole mascot. Other tribes have not. I think it is up to the tribes. The colleges have been using, in some cases but not all, very deroggatory names that the indians find offensive. Would blacks find it offensive if some college mascot was the Spear Chuckers, or would whites be offended if a college mascot was the Honkies, or would mexican americans be offended at the idea of Washington State Wet Backs? Of course they would in all cases. So why do the various indian tribes not have the same right to find offense at the use, for monetary gain, of inflamatory mascot names? They do.

Especially when a clear majority of Native Americans like the idea of having their heritage as a team mascot.

Yeah, it's lame. Soon we could see Notre Dame have to change their name so that people of Irish ancestry are not offended. Or maybe PETA and other animal rights groups get involved by saying that we are glorifying the meanness of a Nittany Lion or a Badger or a Wolverine. It's all so stupid.

unlike one of your other answers, i find it hard to believe that the name of the mascot is considered racist. seminole is racist? illini is racist? Indian is racist? I know a ton of native americans that call themselves indians or american indians. there is nothing racist about that. also, the vast majority of indian mascots are dressed as closely as possible to historic standards, so its not like they are mocking native history by calling them names and dressing people up like idiots. they are using a correct name and dressing their mascots as indians dressed at that time. it won't be long before PETA gets involved and sues schools for using animal names as mascots, because the bears playing the lions creates an illusion that animals are violent, etc etc.
