I don't really understand the question. The Nickel is generally a 3rd down and long formation where it puts an extra man in the back field. This provides more coverage, but leaves you more vulnerable to draw plays. It covers recievers better then a 3-4 or 4-3 because there are more guys back there.
The dime puts 2 extra men in the back field. Because it is weak in the middle, and against the run, it is usually only used against 3rd and VERY longs in desperate situations. It's basicly a prevent defense.
The 4-3 puts 4 men on the line....it leaves 3 LBs.....it's good for attacking both tackles and the center on the pass rush. I like the 4-3 because I think the best way to cover a reciever is to attack the QB and not let him find the reciever.
The 3-4 puts three men on the line. It gives a lot of flexibility for blitzing, and it gives a lot of reaction time for fast LBs. It's a great run defense, because the LBs have space to react, especially at the edge. It usually doesn't apply as much pressure as the 4-3.
All defenses will use a variety of formations, but it's really the defensive play that is called more then the fomration itself. Are you calling a blitz? A zone? A stunt? Etc.
I like the 4-3, but the 3-4 can be very effective as well. A lot depends on the type of personelle you have on your team.

nickel, dime, and quarter are all used. depending on the offense's formation, a 4-3 is also possible, but they usually double when they have extra DBs.
^^^ the dime is used a lot more than on 3rd and 40 or 50... if it were only used on 3rd and 40 or 50 then we would NEVER see a dime formation.

The 3-4 defense is mainly used to stop the running game. The nickle or dime defenses put extra DB's in to help against the passing game.

Any defensive formation works. I mean a safety can cheat on him, or they can use the nickel back If they are in a nickel.
When using the 5th DB (Safeties and Corner backs are DBs) you have to take out some one form your front 7, (Usually a line backer, although you could pull the nose tackle is it is a Hail Mary situation.)
