Hi, okay i dont get this, there are 3 questions i do not understand:
The question is...

To the nearest whole number, what percent of 175 is 89?

and theres another question I dont get...
The question is:

What is 110% of 50?

and the other question is:

A circle has a radius of 18 cm. What is the approximate area?

Plz help me with these questions...
Thanks

175/100*89

50/100*110

pi*18^2

Now get out your calculator and do the equations.

Question 1:

When you are faced with a question like this, first convert the facts given to you in English, into a mathematical form.

So, you have:

WHAT (?)

PER CENT (%, i.e, something out of 100. eg - 80/100 = 80%)

OF 175 (OF signifies multiplication, i.e, ?/100 x 175)

IS 89 ( = 89 )

So, with all that put together, you get:

(?/100) * 175 = 89

Now you can find what '?' is. If you want, you can replace the '?' with a variable of your choice, like 'a' or 'x'. Usually, people use 'x', or 'y' as variables.

When you've solved that, you should get '?' = 50.85 (approximately). You can round this off to 51. Therefore 51% of 175 is 89.

==============================================

Question 2:

Follow the same rule for percentages as in the solution to question 1.

That is, 110% = 110/100.
Therefore, 110% OF 50 = 110/100 x 50.

The 'OF' here again refers to multiplication.

Now when you solve 110 / 100 x 50, you should get the answer as 55.

So, 55 is 110% of 50.

==============================================

Question 3:

The formula for radius of a circle is:
pi x r^2

Now, pi is a constant; this means that the value of pi never changes. The value of pi = 22 / 7, or 3.14.

I am not able to type out the symbol for pi in here, but just do a google search on pi, and you'll get the symbol.

Now back to the formula: pi x r^2

Here, 'r' = radius of the circle.

But when you need to calculate the area using the formula, you need to square 'r'.

Therefore, the 'r^2' means you are squaring the 'r', i.e, 18 x 18 = 324.

So the area of the circle is:

22 / 7 x (18 x 18)

=> 22 / 7 x 324
=> 1017.87 cm^2 (centimeters squared)

==============================================

I hope that was helpful. :)

I'm gonna answer this a different way...
1. You need to find what percent of 175 is 89? You already have the formulas, but to some people the formulas are confusing. The way I usually do this is I will try to find half of the original number. Half of 175 is 87.5. (175 * .5) So I know my answer will be close to 50%. Then I start multiplying 175 by .51, .52. 53 until I get my answer. The answer is 51%

2.What is 110% of 50. OK, you should know that 100% of 50 is 50, right? Now you just need to find 10% of 50. Hopefully you know how to find 10% of something. 10% of 50 is 5. 50 + 5 is 55%

3. Unfortunately, this one you just have to use the formula! Sorry :)

I'm a teacher and these are some strategies that I use to teach my kids. When I was in school we just learned my memorization, but today's students learn through strategies. I hope this helps and doesn't confuse you!!

1.

A whole number is 1,2,3 etc and not 1.4, 2.9, 5.4

So, you need to set up the problem.

175 (x/100) = 89

175 x /100 = 89

175x = 8900

x = 8900/175

x = 50.85

Since this isn't a whole number, go up to 51.

51% is your answer.

2)

50 (110/100) = x

55 = x

3)

Formula for Area of a circle is pi x r^2

You know the radius, 18 cm

Pi = 3.14

3.14 x (18^2)

= 1017.36 cm^2

= 1018 cm^2

Good luck

make them all one step algebra questions and solve them.
1.

% of 175 is 89
n times 175 = 89
n = 89 / 175

2.
n = 110% of 50
n = 1.10 X 50

3.

A = pi times radius squared
= 3.14 times 18 X 18
