When interviewing you should always wear what the boss/hiring manager is wearing. Generally in an office environment a conservative suit with a skirt.

Shoes should be polished and "conservative" (no open toes, or sling backs) pumps with a small heel work best.

Makeup and hair should be neutral and natural, and must look professional. And almost every woman MUST wear makeup.

Hose should be skin colored.

You can never go wrong with a conservative navy blue/black suit and a nice button up blouse.

Personally, I recommend the suit for any interview, even with a casual company. You can always overcome the comment, "you overdressed, we are much more casual than that" with the answer, "I thought so, but I want you to know that I can be presentable for executives and important customers".

No one ever overcome being underdressed, they make no comments and you don't get the job.

Good luck to your mom. Getting a government job is the ONLY secure job in America now.

Listen to Gem. I have been in the corporate environment for over 10 years, and know from experience that she should wear something conservative.

A nice business suit. Or a dress with a matching sweater. Anything nice but not flashy, and not pants.

Conservatively, blue dress jacket, skirt to match (down to the knee) and a white dress shirt.
