Monitors can be catagorized by size (measured diagonally), Output (color, RGB, Monochrome, etc), resolution which is pixels across by pixels down (1024 x 800, 2048 x 1600, etc), aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9 [which is "widescreen"], or technology such as CRT (cathode ray tube), or LCD (liquid crystal display). As you can see, there are many whats to classify a monitor. A typical monitor today may be described as such:

19" LCD widescreen display with native resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels.

Other notes: CRT displays are rapidly being replaced by LCD technology which are lighter, brighter, and much more energy efficient.
