How about Paravana's journey which takes place in taliban-controlled Afganistan. Chu Ju's House is about a girl in China and runs away so her sister doesn't get sent to an orphanage. There's also Memoirs of a Geisha which is historical fiction but I'm not sure if you want to read about historical fiction.

Hawaii by James Michener is the (non-fiction) story of Hawaii starting with the first deposits of volcanic debris. this novel is AMAZING and VERY INTERESTING. i really never thought i could get into an historic novel, but i was FASCINATED by this intriguing account and didn't realize Hawaii had such a wonderful story! you won't be disappointed.
