There is no fee to audition, except for your travel costs getting to and from it.

From their official faq:

Do you charge for the auditions?

No. Auditions are free. Wristbands and tickets are free. You just have to be physically present to get one and you cannot audition without them.

You don't have to pay to go to american idol. You just have to wait in line for a very long time.

not sure about "paid" actors, but some are probably wannabe actors, commedians, reality show contestants, etc. who want their 15 minutes of fame. that is not to say that all of them are though...i really do think that some people really really do think that they can sing and getting slammed on national television is the wakeup call (which sadly even that won't work for some of them). why do you think that they always say things like "my vocal coach (who you are paying money to, they aren't going to tell you that you have no talent) says i'm great" or "my grandmother and parents love it when i sing (most parents don't want to tell their children that they have no musical talent)". also, the show is edited in a way, and seacrest baits the people to say things that make them look worse.

as far as I know, NO you do not have to pay to audition. However, you might have to pay to get to an audition if one's not in your area...including hotel and food and such
