Sounds to me like you have a ground fault, that your neutral is flowing through ground.

This could be dangerous.

Never open the neutral as the lamp will be hot and will kill u. Always switch the hot side. Neutral and ground are nearly the same but it is not good to connect safety ground and neutral together except at the AC breaker box.

you interrupted the ac flow it has to travel both ways when removing the neutral they have limited current flow but not eliminated it
