because it's a mixture of
FeO + Fe2O3

the first is Fe(II)
the second is Fe(III)

it's commonly used when you are talking about mixed minerals and you don't care the valence status of the Fe.

Fe3O4 infact is a mixture of FeOand Fe2O3.Scientists combine the single Fe part of FeO and the double Fe of Fe2O3 and take it as Fe3.Similarly they take the single Oxygen part of FeO and the triple
Oxygen part of Fe2O3 as O4.Thus you have Fe3O4.

It is a higher oxide of iron. When Fe203 and FeO (iron 2 oxide and iron 3 oxide) are reacted, the result is an higher oxide - Fe3O4.

There's Iron(II) oxide, and Iron(III) oxide: FeO and Fe2O3 - those are easy to figure out knowing iron's +2 and +3 ionic charges.

Now "mix" the two!

FeO + Fe2O3 -> Fe3O4

You have magnetite!
