The last book I read was 'Dickens' Christmas: a Victorian Celebration', by Simon Callow. It follows the evolution of Christmas celebrations in England and America, showing how much of what we do today devolves from the descriptions of celebrations in Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' and his other writings.
BTW, Simon Callow is an authority on Dickens. He does reading tours as Dickens, much as Hal Holbrook did as Mark Twain. He even portrayed Dickens in 'The Unquiet Dead', an episode of the new 'Doctor Who' series.
