i put 3 cheques into my ex-partners account. i didn't get paid from work and, therefore, the money didn't go into my account causing the cheques to bounce. she also is now £16 overdrawn. she blames this on me saying it is my fault and they must be charges from the cheques. i thought banks couldn't charge you for having cheques bounce in your account, after all, it's not your fault.
if anyone can help. please do.

Banks in America charge thier customers anytime the account is overdrawn. For example, my bank charges $29.00 for everytime a check bounces on my account (same thing for a debit card transaction) and there is no deposit being made to cover the overdrawn amount. They call this charge an Non Sufficient Funds Fee. In addition to the "NSF" they also charge a fee per day the account is overdrawn of $5.00. There is usually nothing that can be done, however, I was in a situation once that was out of my control (my payroll check bounced). I made several small purchases that day and they charged me for each one. It was insane! My purchases totaled less than $30.00 and the fees were nearly $300.00. I was not a happy camper. I called my bank and begged and pleaded for them to not charge me. They complied and took the NSF charges off the account and paid the transactions. Go to the bank with your gal pal!!

If you write a check, and it bounces, you are fully responisible for the fee. Or, at least you are in the US.
