it is not a contageous desease, it is hormonal disbalance in someone's body. sometimes thyroid gland produces too much hormones - than a person eats and eats and doesn't gain weight or when thyroid gland produces too little hormones a person sleeps all the time and gains weight even if he/she doesn't eat that much. thyroid gland is situated in your throat it has a shape of a butterfly

Sounds like your Mom is thinking of an underactive thyroid. It is called hypothyroidism. It is not contagious. All your Mom needs to do is to have a morning thyroid test. Most dotors will only do a TSH, but I suggest a TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and an antibody test, as sometimes the TSH doesn't always catch the condition until its in a more advanced state.

If your Mom is hypothyroid, she will be placed on a hormone medication. If her free T3 is low, the doctor may put her on a T4/T3 med like Armour.

It sounds like an underactive thyroid. The "something" in the throat is a goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland.
It's not a contagious disease but it is something that can be passed on to your children.
She should go see a doctor and be put on the proper medication for it.

Your mom needs to see a doctor. I have the same problem, it's an underactive thyroid. A doctor will prescibe synthroid or the generic form which will help regulate the thyroid, if the nodule is to big an affecting her breathing they may remove the thyroid. Good luck!

your throid is not contagious. It's a heart shaped gland in your throat above your collar bone but below your adams apple blood work can show if it off.You can gain weight ,feel tired,or opposite depending on if its underactive or overactive throid. If she thinks theres a problem i would call the dr. and have it checked.
