I think that a significant event would have to take place in order for that to happen. As things are now, there are tensions, but that's normal and most people seem to want to keep the status quo.
If there were an incident, however, that gave China an excuse to invade, that could change quickly.
Whether the US would step in to intervene or not is a tricky question. I certainly hope that we would act to protect a fellow free and democratic nation, but political expediency would likely triumph over justice, sadly.
China will of course keep close tabs on the US political climate, and will be pressuring the government to adhere to its one China policy, while also using its influence to try to prevent the sale of more weapons systems to Taiwan.
The Taiwanese technological advantage of having military systems from the US is one of the things that has held off any attacks thus far, since it would be very costly for China to invade.
But the increasing power of China's military (with their best systems sent to the provinces neighboring Taiwan) is eliminating that technology gap, making an invasion increasingly more feasible.
On a global scale, China has been investing heavily in weapons systems that are designed to keep the US from interfering if that day should come. So if we did step in militarily, it would get messy quickly. It's possible that other nations -first in the region (Japan would probably go with the US, Russia would support China) and then around the world- would begin to align themselves with either China or the US, and then, well, we have a bad situation...
On the other hand, if the conflict ends quickly (either the Chinese pull back, which is unlikely because it would be a huge loss of face for them, or Taiwan surrenders, which would be sad, but probably seen by some in the government as the only practical choice in that situation) then it's likely that it would not escalate to a global problem.
Either way, it's not a good situation. The best scenario is that Taiwan continues to be increasingly functionally independent, and China backs off of its demands for reunification. (given that their own economic advances make Taiwan much less of a prize to them than it would have been in the past)

China has a history of claiming what's not theirs, as they are doing by occupying Tibet.
I sincerely hope that they realise the sovereignty of the nation of Taiwan sooner rather than later and leave Taiwan alone once and for all.
Cummunists don't tend to be reasonable an d realistic, though.

I agree with the second person.
Plus, just because China is building up its army does not mean it wants war or wants to take over Taiwan.
China has not been aggressive about taking back Taiwan, but ****** leaders in Taiwan such as Lee Din Hua and Chen Shua Bien(who launders hunderds of millions from the government) want independence.
Most people in Taiwan do not want independence, but prefer maintaining the status quo.
If Taiwan does not bring up the question of independence, then China will not attack.
But if Taiwan declares independence, then they will attack.

There will never be an invasion. One day, China will reacquire Taiwan through peaceful negotiations. I only hope that day is FAR in the future. As long as we get rid of Chen Swai Bein (I'm not sure of my spelling because my Pinyin sucks.) soon, we can all feel more secure in Taiwan's continued freedom.

we would by no potential bypass to conflict with China over Taiwan. so a great way as who might win, possibly the US, besides the undeniable fact that it would harm. the US has extra desirable technologies, however the chinese language have lots extra ability squaddies. however the chinese language financial gadget relies upon on the US and with commerce being suspended they might immediately start to have problems with their human beings revolting.

Well... Taiwan thinks it is free.
It wouldn't stun me if china did this. The USA would bluster but not respond militarily.
The biggest reason they (China) won't is fear of UN economic sanctions.
