While surfing the internet, many modern browsers have an option to block pop ups make sure thats enable. If you dont have a newer browser installed, or if your current browser is acting up, try installing firefox, www.firefox.com is fast and works on most systems and blocks pop ups. Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

It's all about mind over matter. When a pop up comes, focus all of your hatred and willpower to get rid of that popup. The pop up should subside to your might, and shrink away, like so many popped balloons. Because that is just what a pop up is. A baloon. A small thing that's inflated to make itself feel big.

If it's a helium popup they are much harder to get rid of. They will keep returning. For this you need to get five people to gather round your monitor and focus there willpower.

Good luck, and remember, it's all about mind over matter.

On internet explorer go to Tools, and select Pop Up Blocker. This is where it is on IE7 and works really well, and I'd rather not have google or yahoo toolbars which also offer blockers but which can cause problems (as with all extra tollbars)

Google toolbar will do that very well. Also, go to Start > Run > type in "services.msc" and scroll down to Messenger (has nothing to do with Windows or MSN Messenger) and right-click to open Properties then disable it.
