Is Henderson Nevada a good place to raise a family? NEVADA RESIDENTS REPLY ONLY?
Good citizens of the great state of Nevada,
Having lived most my life as a US citizen of frigid and dull Michigan, I am planning to move back to the states soon. Portland, Seattle and Las Vegas are my final three considerstions meeting the requirments of an activity full city, good for new small businesses, not frigid in thje winter and relitivly safe for a major city. Vegas is very atractive but I do not think it is a place to raise kids, so Henderson may be my alternative having the same butifull housing, views and landscaping with very afordable apartments that atracted me for rent
According to an opinion of a BESTPLACES.net member, Joe, Henderson has drive by shootings, is dirty infested with flying cockroaches, and a log jam.

TO THE POINT:
1/ Does Henderson have slot machines at every gas station like Vegas?
2/ Are prostitute girls soliciting in plain view?
3/ Are there strip clubs on every corner?
4/ Are the Henderson schools any good(Nevada ranked last)?
5/ Is Henderson full of gettos?
6// Is Henderson dirty dirty anf full of flying insects?
7/ Is Henderson traffic a log jam?

I moved from MI to Henderson 6 years ago and would never move back to MI. My children were 14 (twins) and are now 21 they attended UNLV. Henderson is a great community with lots to do and wonderful parks, and weather.Yes there are slot machines, prostitution is illegal in clark county, no strip clubs are not on every corner, I work for clark county schools and they were not last, and there are some wonderful schools do your research as far as academics test scores etc, I know of no ghettos in Henderson and it is not dirty at all, just the opposite, we have very few bugs no mosquito's of flys to speak of my doors are wide open now we have some bugs (way less than MI) in the summer.. We have some traffic on the highways depending on the days of the week and times also construction, but generally it is not difficult to get around. There is sunshine 300 days a year. As far as a community Henderson is in the beginning stages as we grow there is more a sense of community.

I'd recommend Henderson over Vegas proper, but to the main question I'd take Seattle over Vegas or Henderson. No matter what anyone tells you, I would highly recommend taking at least a week in each city to get a feel. This wouldn't be a sightseeing tour, so skip the tourist attractions and casinos. Meet with realtors, school administrators, and so on.

To answer your Henderson questions though:

1/ Does Henderson have slot machines at every gas station like Vegas?

Yah. It's legal here, so they're everywhere.

2/ Are prostitute girls soliciting in plain view?

It's not legal here, so no.

3/ Are there strip clubs on every corner?

No. They aren't hard to find if you're looking for one, but they aren't everywhere. I've been to cities where it's worse.

4/ Are the Henderson schools any good(Nevada ranked last)?

Don't know. No kids.

5/ Is Henderson full of gettos?

No. There are some "lower income" areas to be sure, but I wouldn't classify them as ghetto. The majority of the city is nice, anyway.

6// Is Henderson dirty dirty anf full of flying insects?

Not any dirtier than anywhere else. There just aren't as many plants to hide trash on vacant lots. Not much in the way of flying insects. I usually leave my doors and windows open in the spring and parts of the summer. There are spiders though. Ick.

7/ Is Henderson traffic a log jam?

If you come from the middle of nowhere, sure. If you come from any other city in America, no. Because the Henderson/Vegas area is a three shift town, the traffic is dispersed. To be sure, the 5 o'clock rush hour still exists, but it's not that bad, and it's less bad out here on the east side of the city than on the west side.

I have a friend that lives in Henderson and I we have visited often. Here is what I know;
1) Henderson has slot machines at every 7-11, and other places you would not expect. There are durg stores, supermarkets, and gas stations that are just fill it up places with out slot machines.
2) There are no prostitutes soliciting in plain view. Prostitution is illegal in Clark county and law enforcement vigerously enforces this law.
3) There are not strip clubs on every corner. There are around but not every where. You could go a day with out seeing them.
4) Because of the gaming revenus the schools in clark county are well funded. As for the school your child will go to, check out the clark county board of education. See if your school placed at the top or the ottom. If they are at the top, your child can get out of the school what they can put in to it.
5) No! North Las vegas and the area west of the stratosphere up to downtown are the rough areas of the county. Henderson has mostly home owned living spaces and this lowers the crime rate.
6) Henderson is in a dester area. On windy days there might be a dust problem but no insects. The desert does not support a bugs life.
7) The traffic problems are down the strip and up to Fremont street. There are also construction going on at the freeways. Henderson can have traffic during rush hour but not the other times.

What I strongly recoment is that you visit it yourself and you will be able to understand the place better than what you could get over the internet.

TO THE POINT: I have no idea where you have gotten your information about Vegas or Henderson.1/ there are slot machines just about ever where since this is the gaming capital of the world.2/ prostitutes- do you think its legal here? its not- as for soliciting just depends where your are at and what your looking for. 3/no there are NOT strip clubs on every corner. 4/ Nevada may have ranked last however CCSD is trying hard to change their standards. 5/ Ghettos- NOT. 6/ Henderson dirty - NO. 7/ The valley as a whole has grown at a tremendous rate the rate of traffic has also increased. The jams are NOT just here its in every large city. Although you have expressed some concerns I would suggest you get on a plane and VISIT Henderson, check it out for yourself\f and not rely on the answerer's you obtain here.

yes you can gamble at the grocery stores even in henderson but only if you are over 21, ive not seen prostitues hanging out in henderson much, but im usually at joannes or michaels, crafts stores, i dont think there are all that many strip joints but i dont look for them. ive not heard of drive bys in henderson, usually they are in the worse areas of las vegas, nevada ranks low in schools mainly because of the influx of imigrants, they seldom graduate and they dont speak english so its hard for them to deal with school, henderson has some old areas, they were military homes when there was an army base in henderson, flying insects? there are far less insects of any sort here than there were in my home state of indiana, very few roaches at all, ants are the worst problem because of the dry sandy soil, henderson is growing fast so the traffic is getting worse, its really a matter of where you live there and how far you travel to and from work and the hours, you seem very very negative about it, why even consider moving here. we dont need anyone who doesnt like it. face it, this is a gambling state, we are short of school teachers because the area has quadrupled in the last 15 years. for the most part the city is mostly new, the homes are largely new and beautiful, but because of that, its also very expensive, and electricity is high in summer due to the heat. but if you dont like it , try salt lake city, with the mormons. we are happy with our city and our life. If you want bad traffic, dirty streets, hookers on every corner along with the baptist churches, i reccomend you try Atlanta. I lived there 8 yrs too.

coming from some one who used to live in Henderson, I would personally only move back to the Vegas area if I was moving to Boulder City. I love it there. It's a smaller area with more friendly people. and no, Henderson is not the "Getto". ha-ha-ha-ha...
Living in an apt in down town LVNV is closer to living the the "getto" if you're worried about getting robbed or something.
Henderson NV has a higher household income than people who live in Las Vegas cuz the locals only work on the down town Vegas Strip, they don't live there.
but don't get me wrong, there are some scarry neighborhoods in any place you go.
