The only legal way to buy anything or pay off a debt is to use gold or silver, but in the 30's, congress made the use of silver or gold to pay debts illegle. Guess your friend is stuck with a worthless silver dollar.

Well first of all, Morgan dollars have mint marks and paper currency is issued in series. A 1921 Morgan dollar has a value of $11. in good, up to $15 in almost uncirculated, more if in mint state. The Denver one (D) and San Francisco (S) are worth a little more in the higher grades. Values are about what a dealer would pay you.
