Well I have four children and with the first after three days of labor I opted for the epidural too, with the other three I went all natural... I found that it goes alot faster and pushing is minimal after the first... The pain is still there but if you set your mind to it you can manage it.... I found a birthing ball to be helpful and also a warm shower of bath during labor if doctor allows... I had a midwife so they usually like to honor your wishes... stay hydrated drinking lots of clear fluids and maybe eating some fruit to keep energy levels up... Move around, rocking, swaying, even sitting on the toilet can relieve pressure... just make sure you are ready to withstand it all... I found that when the pain became unbearable it was time to push and only minutes left to delivery... my midwife put counter pressure on my legs (pushing towards my stomach during a contraction during labor not delivery and that seemed to help) back massages, helped. Bring something to the delivery that is comforting to you ie. music, smells, treats, pictures, pillows etc..And good luck and remember women having been delivering babies without the help of drugs from the beginning of time it is not impossible you CAN do it!!!! It's hard work but so worth it in the end your recovery time will be so much less, your baby will be more alert, and you won't have to worry about the side effects of any drugs.... I would love to hear how it goes for you...

First- Take the epidural AGAIN!! :o)
You will appreciate it. I had to be induced. At 13 hours into it my water did not break so that is when the doctor broke my water, then i started serious contractions! So about 2 hours into that, i asked for the epidural which had to be inserted three times (argh) but was worth it. by 3pm i began pushing. my baby's hear rate was erratic, i had oxygen and had to control my breathing and stay calm as i can at the time (eh..yeah). now, we already knew i had a big baby, but not so big to have this many problems...i was pushing and pushing yet he wasnt making any progress, the doctor then tried the vacuum, then the forceps, the episiotomy of course too :o( and then at the end the old fashioned hands stuck right in. OMG!!!! I wish I had a c-section. The healing afterwards was so slow and painful too. The doctor was warning me during the time that if my sons heart rate wasnt coming down and getting more oxygen he would have to go in and get him, so that is when i freaked about the c-section and did my best to calm down and take in more oxygen. luckily my son came out bright eyed and ready for anything, the doctor said he never had seen such an alert baby before, and he was...never one for sleeping aftter that anyways (lol, now...not at the time for me!). My son was 9lbs 4oz and 21inches long. Big guy! I know this isnt a pleasant story but its mine...I would have traded the difficult labor for a c-section knowing how long my actual healing time turned out. Either way I would have ended up with the epidural, thank goodness for that!!

Ok, where do I begin. I woke up at 3 am having what I thought was a Braxton Hicks. Five minutes later came another, then another. In minutes, the contractions were 3 minutes apart. We went to the hospital and I was still able to walk until we got to the door of the ER. I was checked in at 4 cm Dialated already.

The way the baby was positioned made it very painful. He was a little bit sideways in my pelvis. The doctor had to actually put her arms inside of me to try and twist him in the right direction. Ouch!

I took an Epidural fairly quickly. I tryed just a pain killer, but it made me loopy.

The doctor broke my water at around 6 cm. I think. To make a long story short. I delivered vaginally. I pushed for two hours.

I delivered at 7 pm that day. I will probably do an epidural for my next pregnancy, but maybe I will try to wait it out a little bit longer.

Right here goes:

Zoe, age 3, 28 hours of labour, gas and air, then pethidine, then an epidural. (It was the bees knees). Episiotomy and finally forceps. I swore there and then that this would be my one and only child and that if she got lonely then I would buy her a dog.

Jack, age 3 mths, 2 hours and 10 mins of labour, born 14 mins after getting to the hospital, no time for any pain relief, although I loudly requested an epidural several times! He came out with my waters intact and it was the most amazing experience ever, you have to do it to believe it.

I didn't think that I could but if it wasn't for concentrating on breathing then I would probably be in jail for murder because it is very painful. Although, I recovered much quicker afterwards this time. Its a hard choice but see how you get on when your time comes and I wish you all the very best of luck and a very healthy baby! Gx

ooo. i was induced as i had gestational diabetes.most people say their birth was amazing but mine was the worst thing ever and i eve had nightmares etc!! it wasnt a paticular bad labour.i was only in labour 5hours!! but the pain was umbearable and as i opted not to have the epidural (silly me, first time birth so didnt have a clue!!) it was pretty horrific!!! being induced aswell, apparently the contractions are MUCH stronger when your induced,i was that dosed up on gas and air and pethidine that when my daughter was born, i was too tired and in pain to even hold her.i just wanted to sleep.i didnt see my daughter until the next day and it upset me!! if i have another child, i would not think twice about having an epidural!! at least i will be 100% conscious to enjoy holding and feeding my baby!! but everybody and birth is totally different.some people can cope very well with little or no pain relief, others cant!! good luck anyway x x x x x

well, with my first i was induced and had every form of pain relief going, except an epidural, you must be bad if you think they are coming near my back with a needle, an inch either way and you could be paralysed, no thanks, i had so much pethedine, that i felt awful for twenty four hours and so did the baby, he just slept, it was a very traumatic birth.

Anyways that was a very negative birth experience, on a more positive note, my second labor was far easier, but it hurt just as much as the first. I started having contractions on his due date, but very irregular, so i went to delivery suite, just to get checked out, didn't have one, for the two hours i was there!!! so went home and about anhour later, they started again, first every ten mins, so i had a warm bath, which was the best feeling ever, so would have loved a water birth, when the contractions were every five mins, phoned delivery suite, and as i got there and onto the bed, they were every 2-3 mins, it was close, no time for pain relief, except gas and air and believe me i was screaming for that pain releif, but they wouldn't give me any!!!!

Anyway i got on the bed and my waters broke, pow, that relieved the pressure and 15 minsd later out he came,it was the best birth ever, because it was natural, no intervention, no drowsy pain relivers and i felt every contraction, But i was totally with it and able to bond with my baby and it was the best ever, and he was awake and alert most of the night and i breastfed him and could get up and do things.

Good luck with your next one, and really try and do it naturally zxxxx

Well with my first child I was induced about 39wks because I all of sudden had toxemia. BP was 154/117. I was in the hospital like five days before they induced me. I couldnt sit up, all I could do was lay on my side or my BP would go up. When they finally induced me my water broke after about 7hrs. They were going to stop pitocin but b/c my water broke they couldnt. After about 10 more hours of contractions I asked for a epidural. Finally after 24hrs of contractions I only progressed to 7cm. they decided I should have a c-section. My 2nd and 3rd pregnancy was a scheduled c-section.After my 3rd c-section I had terrible pain afterwords. I guess it might have been b/c I had my tubes tied to.I
It was a week before I could even sleep laying down in the bed. My other 2 c-sections hardly had any pain afterwords.
I would take advantage of epidural. I used nubain for my 1st pregnancy and it didnt work so I went to epidural. Hope you have a speedy labor. :)

If asking for an epidural is chickening out, you can bloody bet I'm chickening out in August. Who exactly brainwashed you into thinking that pain relief is a sign of failure?

The day MEN give birth, I can promise you they will have devised a way to make it painless from the fist second to the last.

First time round: PAIN, epidural that only worked on one side, MORE PAIN, baby, stitches.

Don't go in there thinking you will avoid the epidural, if you have to have it, ask for it and don't pussyfoot.

Have fun

Listen, if you get to the hospital and you're in agony and are only 3 cm's have the epidural, if you're already 5 and you're not too bad, stick it out. I was 5 cm's when I got there and just when I thought I'd like pain relief it was almost over. You'll be fine. Keep mobile, upright as possible and play it by ear. Mine was 4 hours, start to finish, and that was my first. It depends on you. Ask the miwife what she thinks, she may have a suggestion.

First of all congratulations on your 2nd baby! I also have 2 children (who are now 21 & 17 - and trust me, the time really does go by fast).

I went natural with both kids taking demerol for the pain. I used lamaze breathing with lots of massages from my hubby & lots of walks up and down the hallways.

1st birth was surprisingly fast 8 hours from the time my water broke. He had a hard time coming out (I weighed 127 lbs at birth and he weighed almost 9 lbs). The doctor tried forceps and the vaccuum finally after a lot of pushing and pulling he was born. It really wasn't bad at all.

2nd birth not as good. Maybe I shouldn't tell you, but you asked. Again, only used demerol. My labor was 12.5 hours. It progressed slowly and I was given that medicine that starts with a P (can't remember it right now) to speed things along. (Your having sex alot is funny - oh what we wouldn't do to get those babies out). lol

When she was born they whisked her away because she had meconium and they needed to clear her airways. In the meantime, I was hemorraging. It took them almost an hour to stop the bleeding. I spent the next 2 days in ICU because I had lost so much blood that I nearly died. I had to have 6 transfusions and it took 3 months to recover from it all.

The good news was I came home from the hospital weighing LESS then I did BEFORE I got pregnant! :)

Modern medicine is great - they can handle the easiest and hardest births.

I wish you the best - good luck.
