Madrasa means school in arabic.. Why does everyone refer to the word as some sort of radical muslim school?

Madrassa is just the direct translation of the english word "school"! thats like saying school means a place where radical catholics study!

Schools which do not preach hate, intolerance, and violence are not criticized.

Regrettably, a large number of the madrasahs, particularly those supported by Saudi Wahhabists, preach an extremist cult of Islam which teaches hatred of Christians and Jews and in particular of the United States.

The word is "madrassa", and yes, it does mean "school" in Arabic. But most secular schools outside of Arabic-speaking Muslim countries (in which religious studies is not the main subject) prefer to call themselves "school" in their local dialect or in English (which is the second language in most countries in the world, especially those once colonized by the British).

Why, if you are in Pakistan or Indonesia, use the Arabic term when lessons are not in Arabic?

Good point. Even though it may teach the Koran it does not mean that it teaches extremism. For that matter it may be secular in It's cirriculum also thank you for your voice of reason amongst all the propaganda slingers here on Q & A.

We have a word for schools. It is 'school'!

Madrasahs teach the Quran and other 'holy' things', which our separation of church and state would not allow, from ANYONE'S viewpoint. It teaches--

Qur’an 8:60 “Infidels should not think that they can get away from us. Prepare against them whatever arms and weaponry you can muster so that you may terrorize them.”

Bukhari:V4B52N260 “The Prophet said, ‘If a Muslim discards his religion, kill him.’”

Qur’an 5:51 “Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends.”

I heard the Prophet saying, "In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection."

Bukhari [4:52:177]: Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him!"
