Was the picture on the movie poster and on some DVD cases (the one showing the intersection in the town and the cowboy leaning against the lamppost) painted by Edward Hopper or simply inspired by him? If painted by him – what is the name of the painting?

I believe the picture was taken by Donata Wenders. Director of the film (Wem Wenders) wife.
She did the still photo of it. I have also seen other pictures by her with the same location and cowboy walking past the lampost.
Maybe she was inspired by Hopper.

Here is her website: http://www.donatawenders.com/

I just rented this movie last week and I was curious about the painting now that you mentioned it.I looked at the picture you are talking about and then looked at a scene from the movie where Jessica Lange is walking across the street away from Sam Shepherd and there is exactly the same things in the store window in the picture as there are in the movie scene-check it out!!! www.cinema-france.com.
