It's puzzling. It works both ways. I have an English mother and a Scottish father and have spent a lot of time north and south of the border. I have a Geordie accent, I normally don't meet with too much hostility when I'm up there but people with more southern accents are viewed with suspicion. (Unless they are in Edinburgh, where everybody seems to be Australian!)
England and Scotland have always had a very strong rivalry throughout history. Two strong Identities trying to share the same little island will cause the odd bit of friction now and again.
Unfortunately, that's impossible to avoid because there are too many stupid people kicking about..
I think the **** who attacked your friend would attack anyone who was different to himself. An straight up racist idiot.
I think the blunt answer to your question is, No.
To generalise is wrong you will find that some people are cool and others are knobs, no matter where they are from or where you may find them..

Some people are stupid, plain and simple. Don't let it get you down, it happens everywhere.
If I had a cent for everytime I heard an American make fun of a Canadian, A German make fun of an Austrian, so on and so forth..then I would be rich!
I don't find it funny at all unless of course it is good-natured joking. If it is serious, the best thing to do is say nothing and walk away.
People like that do not deserve your time and attention. And that is what they are seeking..attention. They do not feel confident themselves and they have to cut other people down any way they can. Even if it is something as stupid as heritage, accent, skin color, etc.
They aren't worth your time, trust me. Hope your friend feels better. Good luck.

It has always been this way. I don't think it's racism it's just that you have met an inadequate sad individual, don't waste your time with those types. You sound very down, next time it is on BBC 2 watch "Still Game" a comedy made in Scotland, it is hilarious and it will cheer you up.

I LOVE Scots!

I am Canadian, with Scottish heritage, but know that just about everyone here loves the lilt of a sweet Scottish accent.

If there's a problem where you are, you can bet it's just A-holes hating because they want to, not because there's any real justification for it.

It IS racism in this country, and a police matter - and smacking someone in the mouth is Assault, and a police matter also.

The English have always had a go at the Scots - try rising above it.

**I have a Scots colleague who maintains that he has nothing against the English - apart from the fact that they breathe !!

This is not a good attitude to make friends and influence people.

I just love the Scots, I am now married to a Glasgow wumman, and she is the best thing that has happened to me. I have been to Scotland regularly and have never met anyone who was aggressive they are all friendly, I am a Scouser so I think our sense of humour is similar and that's how we get on.

Certainly not !! Iam Scottish & proud of my heritage. Some people are just ignorant & have no desire to learn from different cultures or societies. I take it it was the scottish boy who smaked the other ned in the mouth, good for him !!

I can`t say I really hate anyone. I have spent many weeks travelling round Scotland and I love the county and the people.
Just report this bully and stand by your mate.

It's not racist, it's political. The Scots have their own devolved Government now and can make decisions that affect Scotland only. Yet they are also UK MP's and can make decisions that affect the rest of the UK. Is that fair?

It doesn't help having the Scottish Mafia in the positions of Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and many other positions in the Cabinet!
