Fossil fuels are running out quickly. Scientists are discovering replacement sources of energy right now. Some examples of replacement fuels are Hydrogen, Solar Power, Nuclear Power, wind generators, fuel cells, alcohol fuels from corn, etc.

Fossil fuels will last forever in the sense that at some point the cost of extracting the fossil fuels from the earth will cost more than alternative forms of energy. The alternative forms of energy will then be the predominate source of energy, based on costs or politics.

Example of this in history is whale oil. Whale oil used to be a major source of energy for the America, but as the whales became scarcer the cost went up and other forms of fuel replaced it, mainly the fossil fuels we use today.

When fossil fuels are 'not as abundent' there will be no cheap fuel. We will be forced to use more expensive alternatives like hydrogen, ethanol, electricity (nuclear) and less productive things like solar/wind. All these alternatives require more human processing and will NEVER be as cheap as the fossil fuels we have today. Even with the efficiency gained by technology modern energy will never be able to keep up with increased demand. What this means is much higher energy costs in the future. So as it is today the more wealthy a country or person is the more likely they will enjoy the benefits of this energy.

It will last forever as the plants are recycling just as they also recycle the air. The plants take in CO2 and the plants hold on to the C and give us back the O2. That is the recycle of our air. Go follow the C cycle and see how the fossil fuels are not fossil except plant fossil.

I suppose if we are serious about our nuclear programs then there should not be any problem arising out of depletion of fossil fuels . i think non conventional sources have vast potential of meeting our energy demands.say, if we are able to trap the energy associated with a single streak of lightning , then it will be sufficient to light up the whole world for months.apart from that we have nuclear fusion reactors which can provide vast as well as clean supply of energy.

As per the present projections, they will last a couple of centuries and much before that there will be other sources, such as nuclear fission and fusion. So, I am optimistic about the future, though there are predictions of a major war in the next few decades.

Do you actually believe there were that many dead animals to render that much crude all over the earth? Oil is a natural precipitation from the earth itself, and there is some evidence, that it is still going on. The powers that be would like to maintain control, and have you be at their mercy, so they claim it a finite resource.
