The Earth is pulled toward the sun by the gravitational attraction of the sun on the Earth. The Earth is moving through space at a speed short of escape velocity but fast enough to maintain an orbit around the sun. As space is a vacuum there is nothing to slow the Earth down so the orbit is maintained, and the Earth 'held' in place.

The Earth's 'place' is called an 'orbit.' This is because the Earth is moving forward rather than just sitting still in a place.

The orbit is shaped by the force of gravity. Without the Sun, to pull at all the planets with its huge weight, the Earth would basically fly through space in an almost straight line. But the Sun is so huge and heavy that it pulls the Earth and all the planets around itself.

So, the Earth is pulled by gravity in a curving path that goes along with where ever the Sun goes! And the Moon just goes along too, where ever the Earth and Sun are going.

The masses of the sun and the Earth create a warpingof space, which can be thought of as a dimple in an elastic sheet (there would be a deep dimple, or gravity well, for the sun, and a shallow one for the earth). These wells narrow quickly toward their center, to a near point, but spread out very quickly over the whole sheet.

Since warping of space is only in one direction (downward) on our sheet, forget, for a moment, about the Earth's gravity well. Earth is within the gravity well of the sun, quite a ways toward the bottom.

In order to keep from falling into the gravity well the earth travels at a speed that keeps it at about the same distance, kind of like one of those motorcycles in the spherical cage at the circus.

So, it is the combination of velocity of the earth and it's distance from the sun, that keeps Earth in it's orbit.

The term gravity is a convenient way to describe these wells because, when the laws of gravity were formulated nothing was known about warping of space or relativity.

The gravity of the sun holds the earth in its orbit around the sun. Then there is the galactic gravity that keeps our galaxy together, apparently spinning around a black hole. The there is universal gravity which holds the universe together. However some astronomers say that force isnt enough and the universe is expanding and will continue to do so and in time the whole univers will spread into nothingness.

The earths inertia caused by its orbital path and the suns gravitational pull hold it in its place. Over a long period of time this balance will degrade and we will be pulled into the sun, if we aren't hit by an astroid first.
