UK based call centres or telephone the usual 01... whatever number to speak with an overseas call centre in Mumbai??

I'm just watching the BBC News and they are saying that the 0870/0845 numbers pay for UK call centres which admittedly I prefer as I have had nothing but problems each time I phone one of these overseas call centres... see for yourself next time you book a holiday with Lastminute.com or telephone Orange mobile phones in the evening!

I used to hate calling those numbers but now I won't moan so much and anyway we can always use those sites which provide alternative numbers.

If companies have an alternative cheaper number you may find it here ( applies to UK calls) Unfortunately companies make money on the expensive 0870 and similar numbers but I think 0845 are standard rate calls.
Try and avoid overseas call centres as you will have problems with understanding them or they cannot understand you!
if you want cheaper calls check out 1899.com.- 5p for as long as you like and cheaper Mobile rates too particularly at weekends..

I have worked for 2 british companies ( telecom and gas) one was 0800 and the other 0845 - for telecom there were centres in the uk and india, and for gas - this is uk only.

most corporations now have 0845 numbers now mainly due to high call volumes and networking the calls from the same number to many call operators. the 0845 /0800 /0870 are non geographical calls so can be distributed to anywhere -

if you dial a geographic area code you would only be able to get through to agents in that area.

Don't believe Andy B about Skype. It is actually more expensive than BT for 0845 and 0870 numbers.

0845 numbers are charged at local rate but 0870 numbers charge anything up to £3 a minute.

The best thing to do - and the cheapest is to buy a Skype phone. There are many of them to choose from. You will end up saving yourself a fortune. I bought one for my parents as I live half a planet away. They save around £180 a month!
