A traffic jam is when the flow of traffic gets backed up and gets congested and the rate of movement is basically at a stands still.
Usually happens during peak hours of quitting time and early in morning work traffic.

This happens when there are many automobiles on the same highway you are travelling, and going in the same direction(or could affect other lanes in opposite direction as well) and something such as an accident or road construction caused traffic to slow down or stop for a period of time. Coming from Florida, you would often see a traffic jam, when people were being evacuated due to a hurricane.

a traffic jam is when there is so much traffic, everyone is "jammed" together and it makes it harder to move.
