My DVD writer (Lite-On SHM-165P6S) works spasmodically (reads but won't write) and my web browser (Firefox) keeps losing my bookmarks . Has anyone any ideas? I wondered if it could be the PSU that's failing

Have checked for viruses and malware, and my computer's clear.

Uninstall your DVD drivers . Do a disk clean up then defrag your computer and reinstall.

no,this dosent have the symptoms of your p.s.u failing, this sounds much more like some kind of malware infection
depending on how long you have had windows installed since you last re-installed it,it may be better to re-install windows xp instead of trying to remove any infection
why do you think it may be your p.s.u,is it making noises,is it stoping all of a sudden,to replace a p.s.u is quite inexpensive.they start at around £20 and go up to around £100 for 600w p.s.u,s
try uninstalling and re-installing firefox, and a system restore may recover your missing bookmarks
good luck

Uninstall your DVD writer drivers and reinstall the latest one, I do not know about firefox though maybe worth reinstalling that as well.

i would think its a virus before that .... usually a psu problem will show in booting or poweron problems or spasmodically shutting down ...
