Ok let me begin with a little background first. Any British people will probably know what im on about here. During the week I watched an episode of Top Gear involving the 3 presenters driving across the US in old cheap US made vehicles, eventually arriving in New Orleans to sell on their cars to the locals.

I am assuming the programme was recorded fairly recently ie within the last month or 2.

However to their horror and I would say the viewers horror upon arrival in New Orleans it appears that apart from the subsiding of the floodwaters New Orleans resembles the war torn streets of Mogadishu in Somalia!!!!!

My question is this - How can any American be proud of their country when their president and government has simply failed to act. If this was a predominantly 'WHITE' area i bet it would be totally rebuilt with memorials all over the place.

it is simply the most blatant act of Racism I have ever encountered & I am not easily shocked.

I feel sorry for you people !!

The parts of N.O. that are still devistated are mostly in the areas that are belwo sea level and never should have been built there in the frist place. N.O. in particular and the state of Louisinana in general are the most corrupt places in America, the govts there have long been known for their mismanagement and graft. Why all those homes were allowed to be built over the last 200 years is a good question, but most did not have flood insurance. As you put it, had this been in a white area (such as homestead after hurricane Andrew, or Ponte Verde after Charlie) which was completely wiped out, you didn't hear cries of The Govt has to help us. We prepare for such things so if the unthinkable happens we have a plan to take care of ourselves. And by the way, what many people outside of America's silent middle class don't understand is that here in America we value personal responsibility, we look down on those who suck off the govt coffers. We don't expect teh federal govt to be responsible for putting our lives back togetehr after a natural disaster. That is our job as individual Americans. p.s. the only good thing about N.O. is the port and it is functioning just fine...the rest of the city is pretty much a shithole anyway.

I live around Baton Rouge. Until the levee systems are totally fixed what's the point of rebuiding anything. The pumps still aren't working 100%. Why rebuild in a fishbowl to lose your stuff again. Before you start pointing fingers, ask what our governor has done but beg for money. Look at Mississippi. They seem to be fixing things up. Blanco needs to move over so a real governor can get things done.

The sad fact is, that due to its fame--New Orleans has gotten MORE help than the rest of the area that Katrina and Rita ravaged. And those areas are NOT predominantly black, either. Just not populated by people the government cares about. I was in the area visiting my aunt and uncle a couple months ago and it is a disgrace.
