I need to get rid of my Jeep cherokee and get something with better mpg than 15mpg. Hopefully around 30mpg or higher. I drive about 50 miles a day 5 days a week and another 100 miles a day the remaining two. Both are a mixture of city and highway driving. I hate cars(I'd rather have a truck or keep my Cherokee but I need to cut on gas) so basically anything I get will not visually appeal to me, so basically all I care about is mpg, reliablity, and cost. I can afford about 2,500 down and about 300 a month. Anybody have any views on a good car for my driving conditions? I don't like VW's (unless its a GTI) so theyre mostly out of the question.

Whether you are buying new or used, Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas are the best. They are not too small and don't rob you of comfort feature like small econo-cars can. If you are buying used, also consider a Mazda Protege with a 1.5 liter engine. It is roomier than many mid-size sedans and easily gets up to 38 mpg on the highway if not pushed. I drive in constant stop & go LA traffic and usually average between 33 to 35 mpg in the Mazda.

I would recommend a CRD or TDI Diesel.
For the US market I know of only a few manufactures that offer the CRD TID engines. On is VW the other is Jeep. I would recommend a new Jeep Liberty CRD diesel. You would have plenty of power and easily get the 30-40 mpg range. I know that VW has discontuned sales on the Passat TDI I do not know about and other. In Europe about 8 to ten years ago they came out with the common rail turbo diesels and they are fantastic, in the last couple years it has been harder to find a gas powered car. Since you do the driving I really believe that you would like this vehicle.

A honda element is AWD and gets about 20/24 mpg. The new civic gets 30/38 or 30/40 Manual. The insight gets an incredible 51mpg.

I have a 2005 Mercury Mariner with 4WD. added the K&D airfilter and boosted the mileage to 28 mpg highway and 23 mpg city. I wish that I would have got the Hybrid gas/electric; this would have almost doubled my fuel efficiency. The Mariner is a great little SUV and drives like a car, plows through snow and handles great. They list for about $23,000, Hybrid adds about another 5K but its worth it for what you will save in fuel. Go test drive one, you won't be disappointed.

Well any hybrid will get you that. Um I would say the HOnda crv gets one of the best mpg for a suv. As far as trucks go check out the honda ridgeline. Second to honda would be nissan and toyota

Chevrolet Aveo Sedan or Coup. Or hatchback but I think the hatchback is ugly. 30 plus miles per gallon. I have had mine a year and it is a great small car. Sitting in it feels like a larger vehicle. All I can suggest is test drive one and decide for yourself.

Hop on ebay, buy an old diesel from the mid 80's, and spend less than $2500 on it. Now you've got yourself a new car that will get great mileage.
