Let total no. of seats = X
(3/8) X are female and (2/5) X are male
(3/8) X + (2/5) X = (15/40) X + (16/40) X = (31/40) X
No. of unoccupied seats = (9 /40) X
Fraction of seats on plane that are empty = 9/40

Since 3/8 seats occupied by females.
And 2/5 seats occupied by males.
Therefore,Total seats occupied=2/5 + 3/8=31/40
and No. of empty seats =1 - 31/40 = 9/40.

9/40 put the two fractions on a common denominator which can be found by multiplying the bottom of both fractions together. multiply the tops by the opposite bottom then add. take away from 40 out of 40 and you get 9 left. ie 3./8 and 2/5 8x5=40
3x5=15, 8x2=16 15+16/40=21/40 40/40-21/40=9/40 either do your own homework or contact me and i can help you. your call

3/8 + 2/5

You need to find something to times both fractions to produce a common denominator:

so multiply top and bottom of 3/8 by 5 = 15/40

and then multipy top and bottom of 2/5 by 8 = 16/40

then add 15/40 + 16/40 = 31/40

40/40 - 31/40 = 9/40 that means 9 seats are free
