Study and pay attention in class. Take lots of notes. Do homework. Ask friends for help. Sometimes a teacher doesn't seem to be able to explain a concept in words that you can understand, but a friend may be able to put it in words that make more sense.

If you are already doing all of these things, maybe you do not have a strong enough background in your basics and might need to go back and review some earlier concepts.

Practice solving as many problems as you can from the chapters that'll be covered by the next math exam. Compare your solutions with ones given in the book to determine your weaknesses and remedy your shortcomings.
