It is very expensive here. You did not mention if you had lodging arranged. The inexpensive and fun way would be to stay in Hostels. Motels rooms are very expensive here and the cheap rooms you do find are in neighborhoods you really should not be in.
If you have a student work visa you can pick up part time jobs. Save enough money so you do not have to find a job right away so you can enjoy your time here. Try looking into Craigslist for bay area employment or San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

dont expect to get a job easily
san francisco bay area is the most competitive job market in America. even if there is a opening for a job, there are 20 other people competing against you to get that job. if you are the best then you can get a job. and you have to keep the job.
If you just want to make money you could work at a fast food resturant or cafe. maybe serve as a slovakian language tutor. you have to consider that staying in SF for a short period of time like this is extremely difficult becuase you will have a realy hard time saving the money you make. the cheapest rent for the worst homes here are 1200 a month, and that is in a bad neighborhood. decent living quaters are around 2500 for a two bedroom apartment in a relatively good neighborhood. if you work at minimum wage ( which is the highest in the USA) for 9 dollars a hour you will have to work from 6am to 9pm, 6days a week to make $3,240 which will be barely enough.
hopefully you will get a high paying job that facilitates your talents in economics. i hope you can make lots of money!!!

Why dont go to the internet and find jobs available for your position. Check the banks over there and get its number email and landline to determine availabilities of job.
Are you sure you are going to San Francisco? The tax there is the highest so far in the US. The cost of living is definitely high. It follows that the rentals are higher too. I had been there for 2 months in 2005. Parking fee is also expensive. It is better to take the buses.
If you are going to get a studio type room it will cost you around $1,000+++. Better see also the areas over in Daly City. Parking and rental is a bit lower in that area.

Fat chance you will get a job for only 4 months... Besides housing here is murder... I am being brutally honest.
