Every year is different. This year is Feb 18. Normally Chinese celebrate at least for 3 days, i.e. Feb 18 (1st day), Feb 19 (2nd day), Feb 20 (3rd day). They will say something very very nice and wish people good luck in greetings whenever they see each others on these 3 days.

there are many days. but the actual new year is tomorrow (sunday). but people do start celebrating, praying, and lighting firecrackers before sunday, usually 2-3 before the day.
for example, today, i went to see my grandma, we lit firecrackers, prayed for my late grandfather, and burned paper money and clothes for him in heaven.
hope that helps.
