Generally speaking, action movies provide stimul mentally and emotionally as an exercise or extension of our need for 'instant gratification,' perhaps in the way that we enjoy 'intense action' to arouse a real sense of adventure and escape.

Generally speaking also, the disadvantages may be that the urge to produce strongly focused action sequences sometimes robs the audience of more thoughtful introspection, like character study, soliloquy, or dialogue with subtlety.

So - action movies can help us feel satisfied we're seeing results, but they can make us feel unsatisfied about the emotional depths of the situation.

Action movies almost always make money, which is good because they're usually expensive to produce. From a creative standpoint, they seldom win awards and the actors associated with these projects often complain that they're not being taken seriously. When a bid budget action-er is a flop, the studio stands to lose its shirt.
