Keep trying.... don't give up. It takes preactice and is time consuming but any woman & baby can do it.

Make sure your sister is relaxed & comfy. The easiest way for me to bf is to lie on my side... have her lay with the baby facing her and the "line up" should be right on.

Make sure the baby is taking enough of the nipple into her mouth. Most of the areola (brown part) should be in the baby's mouth. You may have to hold the breast, kind of squeeze it with your hand ... forming a "C" with your hand, around the areola.

Touch the nipple to the roof of the baby's mouth. This stimulates them to latch on.

Just don't give up... be there for your sister and show her support. Have you contact her pediatrician if you think she needs more help than you can give her. Keep in mind it's not possible to know for sure how much the baby is drinking. As long as she is having wet diapers she's getting enough.

Go to Kellymom.com ... they have a lot of info there and many moms who can help you.

Good luck... and tell your sister she's doing the right thing.

Oh... one more thing.... it's best not to give the baby formula or a bottle this young if your sister plans on having a healthy breastfeeding relationship with her daughter. There's a fine line there. ... she needs to make sure the baby is getting something and not getting dehydrated. So if in doubt, call her ped.

Hope this helps some. Good luck !

Australian breastfeeding association are angels. Run by women who volunteer, are highly trained and have successfully breastfed their own babies.

www.breastfeeding.asn.au

Most of all be supportive of your sister. Research the knowledge and support that she needs (she'll be too tired to do much besides look after her baby bundle), let her know about it and support her decisions.
Hope she continues to breastfeed, it is really wonderful, once you get past the learning part. Remember that both she and the baby are learning, it takes time...

If she 's in Australia look up the ABA website, they also have helplines you can call in each state. Even if she decides to go bottles give them a ring they can help with how to wean from the breast in a way to minimise the risk of blocked ducts, mastitis and pain.

Help her to be careful of who she takes advise from. Listen to those who parent the way you want to be. For example, why listen to your mum/aunt/friend/sister who didn't breastfeed for long or who had many problems and gave up. Seek people who have had problems and succeded. When given advice ask people for their experience so you can understand where they're coming from. Also be wary of many doctors, I've heard the get a total of about 8 hours training on breastfeeding, and not much of it the 'human' side of it. Many friends and myself have been given wrong advise by doctors and child health nurses who are trying to help but are not up to date. Good luck and congrats to your sis!!

You don't do anything, If the baby doesn't take to the breast then the baby needs formula milk. You'd best consulting the midwife first rather than checking on here. Oh yeah and if your sister really wants to breast feed, you can always buy a breast pump.

There isn't much that YOU can do unless YOU are your SISTER. Because the one breastfeeding is the one with the problem. I'd like to give you some words of advice but I didn't breastfeed my daughter...All I can offer is to be consistent or bottle feed.
