"Brass" is a slang term for money or cash. Years ago a lot of our coins had brass in the alloy, hence the term Brass. It is used similarly in cockney rhyming slang. Brassic lint.. Skint!

It depends on the context in which it is used.

"Balls". That comes from the old expression about it being, "cold enough to freeze the balls off a Brass Monkey".
"Money". Coins were at one stage made from copper and brass.
"Officers". "Brass" referred to the gold on an Officer's Hat and Uniform.
"Courage". Someone who would do some thing that others would not was said to have the"Brass" (Balls) to do it.
