the vince carter over the french guy in the olympics might be the most publicised dunk, and possibly the best dunk of all time. but THE GREATEST DUNK was when jerome lane of the pitt panthers got a pass on a 2 on 1 break and did a total facial on the providence friar player AND broke the backboard. every time i see that dunk i just get hype.

If you talk about the meanest, funkiest dunk and match it to a tough play-off situation, not just a po-dunk game, then I would say the Michael Jordan dunk against the Knicks in (1992? playoffs) when he juked Starks and McDaniel out of a trap and took the baseline, then grabbed the Empire State building Elevator up over Patrick Ewing and threw it down. VC is amazing, but never when it matters.

I , like a lot of the posters, have seen the amazing array of dunks that have been replayed thruout the years by Julius (the last ABA dunk contest with David Thompson (legendary dunker with a 48 inch vertical)was amazing, here he made the free throw line jam famous) all the MJ dunks (the one over Ewing) the first backboard that Daryl Dawkins aka Chocolate Thunder shattered (he broke two)...but to this day it was Spud Webb's slam that impressed me the most, the one that closed out the dunk contest and left all of the all-stars sitting at court side watching jaw-dropped and wide-eyed...their reaction alone told the story...now in a game situation I like Dawkins jam, showed enormous power to shatter a backboard like he did, not just tear the rim out of it...funny how he started naming his dunks like the titles of Funkadelic songs...

The best game dunk, I believe, was Dr. J's fastbreak one-handed rock-a-bye baby dunk against the Lakers. It's a simple dunk by today's standard, but no one has ever matched Erving's perfect execution of that throw-down. He had perfect timing on the take-off and glided to the hoop with grace while cradling the ball with his huge hands and cocking it all the way up with his elbow above the rim. Truly a poster move!
Best contest dunk? I'd have to say MJ's side-winder, kiss-the-rim windmill in '87. Perfect take-off and unbelievable hang-time. Jordan made us all believe that man can truly fly.

man there are a lot..
in the nba..
i gotta say KGs putback dunk from after a missed free throw (?) where he got the ball just below his hips and still threw down the powerful dunk.
mj's free throw dunk.. i still have the poster mid - air tongue out
mj's dunk over mutombo and wagging afterwards
eddie jones free throw dunk during the game...
d-wade, STAT dunks
BUT the best for me, its when paul alvarez (6-4 filipino PBA player) dunked over an 6-9 american import player, literally posterizing him.. back in the day that was huge for the filipinos who had very few true blue pinoy basketball players who can dunk the ball... sorry boyz, personal favorite of mine

Simple answer -- Grant Hill off the Bobby Hurley alley oop in the 1991 NCAA Finals in Indy against Kansas. The pass was high and behind and Hill reaches back at about 11 o'clock with his head nearly hitting the rim then tomahawk at arm's length over the defender (I think it was Scot Pollard).

Best dunk is the classic dunk everybody knows about, and that's MJ taking off from the free throw line with his signature tongue sticking out. I know Dr. J did it earlier, so props to him, too. But that dunk by MJ is engraved in every fan's memory, and represents the NBA in the best way possible.

James White, between the legs from the foul line. That hasn't been done before, it looks easy, but that's just because he is amazing.
