One doesn`t need Ken Anger to tell us that most of `straight` Hollywood was in fact gay; and it probably still is for that matter. But we`ll have to wait for the film historians to find out for sure.
So why the G and L Film Festival at the BFI?????????

I thought men are gays and women are lesbians? So for "Men and Women Film Festival" right? or am I naive?

No it's not a redundancy because the title refers to the content of the movies not the real life actors/actresses portraying the characters. In the grand scheme of things there are relatively few gay/lesbian characters and even fewer homosexual-themed movies. This festival provides an outlet for films that are unable to compete against the bland mega-blockbusters that clog the movie theaters.
I was under the impression that behind closed doors Old Hollywood was a lot more forgiving of gay sexual orientation? I've read that there were a lot more gay hook-ups at wild Hollywood parties back then than there are now. Tallulah Bankhead seems like she was a kick! And old-time studio heads were far more aware of the true sexual orientation of their actors - they would help to hide the truth from the general public. Not sure if it's true or not...
