I have been in the electronics field all my life and can tell you that if lightning were to strike your house circuits or produce a surge, the voltage doesnt care one iota whether your system is turned off or not! Its gonna go thru it regardless! The ONLY way to protect your electronic equipement of ANY kind is to unplug it from the power source and disconnect any other connections to the outside world such as phone lines and or cables!

Yes, switch it off if there is a chance of a power loss. It happened to my computer and ruined it. Long story, but i ended up buying another computer cuz the computer guy said the board was no good. But this time I got a Battery backup now and it is like a surge protector too. Those $9 surge protectors are not worth diddley squat.

actually i suggest unplugging the whole system, including the phone line.
i live in an area with frequent thunderstorms, and my own modem and motherboard fried when lightning struck the phone lines.there were sparks jumping out of the modem.
i have a friend who works at a store and he showed me the place after lightning struck the power lines. everything had been switched off, but the lightning blew the fuse boxes off the wall and went on to fry three store computers despite the switches.
unplugged is the safest option in a thunderstorm.

yes because if lighting happens to strike your phone line your modem will be internally damaged. If a power surge occurs it can destroy your computers power supply. i think the down time is well worth a happy healthy pc

You don't need to turn it off; just disconnect it from your phone line if you have the misfortune to be using dial-up.
