I cannot find a "significant" California quake in 1953, but there were 2 big ones in 1952 and two smaller ones in 1954.

The largest occurred on July 22, 1952 and had a magnitude of 7.3. It was located in Kern County at 35.27 N and 118.63 W (about 23 miles EWE of Bakersfield, CA).

There was a significant aftershock on Aug 22, 1952 at magnitude 5.8 that did significant damage in Bakersfield.

There were a couple of other earthquakes in 1954 - a 6.3 magnitude one in Eureka, CA on Dec 21 with aftershock on Dec 30. It did some

Another 1954 quake happened in Concord, CA (NE of San Francisco 25 miles) on Oct 24 and had a magnitude 5.4.
