It's teriffic you've exposed this! Looks are over-valued in our society, and it's little consolation for the unattractive that "what matters is invisible to the eye" (to steal the quote from The Little Prince).
Most people say looks don't matter, but what they mean is that looks SHOULDN'T matter.
The real question is, "how will we, as a society, fight against the media's celebration of youth & beauty?"

In the animal world reproduction is based on looks. Males and females of any species look for the stongest and healthiest. Same can be said for humans. Looks are what attracts us to each other. On the other hand I have dated women who were very attractive, but had the personality of a cobra. If people could get over the looks thing I think you would see a decline in divorces. I don't think it's a lie, it's what on the inside that will KEEP a mate.

It is not a lie, but just polite fiction. Too many people are dualist's about looks; rather as the persons looks are not really part of them. As if you could take your " looks " off, like a jacket. The Oprah crowd is like this. Their talk of " real " beauty is skewed, because they speak of things that are good, but not strictly beautiful. Beauty is an euphemism to them. Personality is important, though. I do not know that it can overcome you friends looks, though. He will have to probable get rich or settle. These things are continuous, that is normally distributed, so not everyone is going to have a good as chance at life's out comes. All humans look for partners who are kind and intelligent, first.

In Social Psychology, it has been proved that better looking people have better jobs, earn more money, therefor have better jobs, get help more quickly, make better impressions, get less heavy judgements in court, and so on... Isn't that sad? But it's reality. Tallness has also an impact, as well as the way you dress, and unfortunately, the colour of the skin. Black people get harder sentences than white people. But personally, when I really get to know someone who's not that attractive and the personality is great, it makes them more attractive!

As far as i know society doesn't say personality is more important,, society has become tv, movies, and advertising, and it all points to looks as the big thing. I think if u ask individual people though you will get many different answers. I would say "steve" just hasn't found the right one yet.. Peace out

Well...i guss now looks are playing an important role.As human, we judge people by the looks and not personality.I agree.Since sight is the first sense,we would want something that has good appearance.Later, the idea of whether the personalites agree comes 2 our mind.

Looks are VERY important, attractivness is the initial lure, but looks can't sustain a relationship. After the initial attraction, it's what's inside that will hold the relationship together, so it BECOMES more important.

I think when we say personality..its the whole package...even a person is slightly ugly(lol) or not that good looking....as long as he or she has a great smile and great attitude..they look nice and i think thats what they say that its the inside that counts.....there are people who are good looking but looks like a brute....and just plain rude....they just look ugly

To try and not make others feel bad about themselves.. but the whole thing kind of turns in on its self when everyone plays by the same rules but says they dont care about aesthetics.
