On the first day, God created the dog and said:

"Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The dog said : "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span."

The monkey said: "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?"

And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."

The cow said: "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."

But man said: "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"

"O kay," said God, "You asked for it."

So that is why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.
For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family.
For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.
And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you...

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

You're assuming there is one.
Most human beings feel some need for meaning in their lives but because we like the idea it doesn't follow that there is any meaning. Religions offer some ideas but for a lot of people a sense of meaning comes from personal relationships. We all have a limited life span and no certainty of anything afterwards so meaning is probably best thought of in relation to making the best of life now. The best of course is another question but personally i think in terms of the people I care about and what I'm leaving behind. In the end I don't suppose it matters. We'll all be ultimately forgotten and history will flow on but it some sense of purpose or meaning does seem to be important to keep us functioning at all.

To find a meaning in life is the meaning of life. It may take the entire length of your existance but to finally feel that you have direction, meaning and purpose, no matter what that is, is your purpose. Life is subjective after all.

this is a question for a infant mind the meaning of life is to live there is no meaning so stop trying to find what does not exist. This is such a silly question that has no logic its like saying what is the meaning of bird flu if you know anything about evolution or science you would say the question is moronic

No one knows "THE meaning of life". If life had just ONE meaning, wouldn't that be boring and comforting?!
I believe that people create meanings for life, and the result of the process seen outside it's like an anchor for their insights!
