If they play too much they can not concentrate in school. This seems especially evident in grade school to Jr high.
When the grades start slipping then the game play hours
need reduced. I think it has to do with over stimulating the young mind that they can't can't concentrate on any thing that is not exploding. I have raised 5 kids and would like nothing more than they be entertained and out from under foot, I would let them play to their hearts content but when grades start slipping it needs limited again. I read about a recent study that confirmed my findings and said the TV has the same effect, how ever week end usage had little or no effect according to the study.

I don't know really, but as a teenager, I'd have to say it has had no effects on me. I'm a straight A- to A+ Honor Roll student that has no anger or depression issues. I think that it's really the person who changes themselves, if they get too consumed into what their doing, then a change perhaps could happen. Their perspective of the real world and the game world could be altered and warped in such a way that they can't tell the difference anymore. That's just my two cents. Also a recent study has stated that playing video games might actually be beneficial to a child's eyesight. It said that when tested, a group that played though provoking and intense action games had 20% better vision than the control group.

Though long periods of game playing, such as promoted by "MMORPGs" can have a serious anti-social effect, i have always found multiplayer console games (particularly ones with 4+ players) have been a real social stimulant. Games can be a boost to the imagination, and the increasing amount of brain-function focused portable games may be of interest to you as well. One thing to note though, is with reasonable exceptions, don't buy your child games that are not rated suitable for their age group. I can't stress this enough - if your young child gets a 'bad influence' from a GTA game then it's your fault entirley for ignoring the age restriction. Videogaming, as part of a varied leisure time, can and will be beneficial to your child.
