When I was growing up - the "backless sandal that consists of a flat sole held on the foot by a u-shaped strap that passes between the first (big) and second toes" - we called those thongs. Now in America it means something totatlly different. What do you call those shoes?

in the uk these r called flip-flops, and a thong is a style of underwear, for women, altho some guys, to us females dismay, sometimes wear em too, NOT a good look on a guy!
