It appears that an extreme culture of fear, instead of a culture of hope, is spreading like wildfire over America, thus leading so many to unnecessarily paranoai of losing their identities and having the psychological fear of being incapable of controling their own personal destinies by not following/immitating the crowd. Obesity seems to be a fad... obesity for food; obesity for sexual gratification; obesity to cling to a familiar surroundings/groups and to appease groups as if safety is by numbers; obesity for security to make them willing to sacrifice their freedom and have the law bending over everyone's shoulders at all times; obesity for hate of everything unknown, different, or out of the ordinary; and obesity to humilate (just watch those politicians and TV honkers lashing their tongues!) Are we becoming like those ancient Monks, isolated within the walls of their coptic monastries and living in fear of being contaminated by everything outside their safe havens?

Americans as individuals are not necessarily more paranoid or afraid. What is happening, is the government is trying to keep us in constant fear as a nation, by coming out with new enemies for us to fear and the occassional alerts. If they continue to do this on a regular basis, they can keep the nation under control and lead us where they want.
Look at the increase in security measures. When have we ever needed a passport to get to Canada? The government is hurting our economy and Canada's in their constant quest to keep the nation in a state of panic.
I lived on a military base in Europe that constantly inspected our persons and vehicles every time we tried to go home. Not all bases did this, but ours did. It was all under the premise of "safety". In reality, it was so some Commander could look good for his next promotion.
The national government is doing the same thing. They put in all these new "safety" measures, so we feel like we should be afraid and they are helping us. In reality, it is so the politicians can wave around all the bills and laws they passed and try to look good, so we'll keep giving them power over whatever they want.
Look at the government and the confiscation of library records to see if anyone looked up information on creating weapons. What if someone checked out a book on nuclear fusion for their college paper? They very well could be labeled the next terrorist.
There is not a pervading feeling of national fear, just an attempt by the government to put us in fear and launch an international witch hunt.

But by reacting to it, should we not be careful in spreading more fear. The point is not to be paranoid, whether you're on the right or the left or whatever view you take. I find that the progressive news programs are as guilty of this as any other. What we need are messages of hope and a little more pro-action and involvement.
