There was a woman on TV last week who had successfully claimed back her bank charges and also those of a number of friends. She said that the process is fairly easy and mostly successful. Makes a change to be able to fight the big companies.

You are correct and you should be able to claim bank charges for the last 6 years!!. There is a step by step guide including templates of letters that you will need to send to your bank at the link that I've submitted below!! I've found it REALLY useful!! This site also has a forum which people are telling there success stories and highlighting problems they had actually getting their charges back. You have to be careful as some banks (nationwide in particular) closes your bank account once they have refunded your money. Really you need to set up a new bank account first and move any direct debits etc. It's all explained on the site!!!!

Good luck!!

YES but this is not a legal entitlement at this time.

The Financial Ombudsman states that bank charges should be fair and proportionate to their costs. Being charged £30.00 for a letter telling you that you have gone £1 over your limit is not fair or reasonable. Trading Standards are currently looking into the issue.

A man recently called in bailiffs to a bank branch after a small claims court filed in his favour. The bailiffs threatened to take computers and money from the till to cover what was owed until the manager gave a written undertaking that they would pay what the court stated he was entitled to!

Good on ya Britons for standing up for your rights!

BANKS BEWARE!

In many cases yes - if necessary refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman
The mere threat of doing so could well be successful as all cases referred to the Financial Ombudsman cause them a lot of work and quite a substantial fee payable by them

Only in certain circumsances:
a) you have been a model customer for years and had a minor and only blip
b) a mistake has been made
c) you go overdrawn and then keep being repeatedly charged for being overdrawn - you can ask them to 'freeze' the overdraft and stop adding on charges

yes im with barclays. request the last 6 years of statements (barclays didnt charge me anything for mine) then highlight all of your charges but make sure you got copies for your self then send them off RECORDED delivery. i recieved my off er yesterday my charges added up to £1589 and they only offered me £350 as a gesture of goodwill. (if they offer you a poxy amount go to the next step and send a letter declining the offer and you are starting small claims proceedingsunless the give you most or all of it.. so now we are just waiting after turning down there small offer.
