Junior high school is grades 7-8 (typically age 12 when starting and age 14 when finishing)
Freshman year is first year of high school-grade 9 (usually age 14)
Sophomore year is second year of high school-grade 10 (usually age 15)
Junior is third year of high school-grade 11 (usually age 16)
Senior is fourth year of high school (usually age 17)
Middle school is usually grades 6-8 (ages 11-14)
Most American school systems choose either the junior high or middle school model for different reasons. Middle school is considered the "bridge" between elementary school and high school. The most noticeable changes is schooling take place between 6th and 7th grade, Middle school helps ease the transition.
