From your description it sounds as though you're looking for MIDI files, these are purely instrumental - and some can be very professional.

It's really hard to download songs from sites now a days. I don't know of any websites that you can download songs.
But what you are looking for is "instrumental" songs. Say for Instance you want to download a song by Usher. You would take the name of the song and put Instrumental behind it. Usher - Caught Up Instrumental. It would bring up just the melody but no lyrics. Hope this has helped a bit. Best choice is using limewire or some p2p program.
