My lil sister sucked her thumb till she was almost four. But I have heard you can put tape on the thumb or something that tastes bad so they dont wanna put it in their mouth. Not sure what really works though.
This stuff is called stop. Click the link for more information about it.
Thumb sucking and nail biting are habits that can rapidly become uncontrollable. And, unfortunately, they can be visible and unhealthy. Mavala, the world leader in natural nail care, has developed a product to stop these habits.
What Does It Do?
Mavala® STOP is perfect for stopping:
* Thumb Sucking.
* Nail Biting.
* Cuticle/Skin Biting.
* Pencil/Pen Biting.
How Does It Work?
You apply Stop on the nails. Mavala Stop has a bitter yet harmless taste that stays on the nails or thumbs for a day or two. The bitter taste will take away the desire to continue the habit. It is perfectly safe for children, too. STOP has the appearance of clear enamel. STOP can be used by adults and children.
How To Use
Apply a coat over the entire nail, thumb, pen, etc and allow to dry. Repeat the application every two days. Continue the treatment until nail biting or thumb sucking habit has been stopped. Never wash hands immediately after application.
Ingredients: Ethyl Acetate, Alcohol Denat., Butyl Ester of PVM/MA Copolymer, Phthalic Anhydride/Trimellitic Anhydride/Glycols Copolymer, Butyle Acetate, Acetyl Tributyl Citrate, Sucrose Octaaacetate, Denatonium Benzoate, Isopropyl Alcohol, Benzophenone-1, CI 60725 (D&C Violet No. 2).
Quantity: One .3 fl. oz./10 ml bottles. Made in Switzerland by Mavala®.

Thumb-sucking generally subsides of its own accord.
It is a fact that thumb-sucking can result in the baby's upper front teeth being pushed forward and the lower teeth back. The extent to which the teeth are displaced will depend on how long the baby sucks her thumb and how she positions her thumb. This displacement of teeth is not permanent, i.e. it only affects the baby's milk teeth. The child's permanent teeth come in around the age of six. So as long as thumb-sucking is curtailed before the age of six, there will be no permanent damage to the child's teeth.
Try to distract her with a toy when she begins to suck her thumb. But do it as subtly as possible or she will catch on.
Corrective measures such as restraints, elbow mitts, bad-tasting substances painted on the fingers, etc. usually backfire. Pulling the child's thumb out of his mouth will only serve to make him rebel against this restraint and encourage him to continue the habit.
Encourage the child to give up the habit in a friendly, non-judgemental manner.

First and foremost there is really no evidence to prove that it changes the shape of the mouth and teeth. Relax if the child does not suck the thumb, who would. Parents need to relax a little and not get bothered by small troubles. It's easy to say, I understand but really doing it, is a small problem.
My niece had the same problem, my mom suggested apply neem juice on the thumb, the taste would be stopping her from sucking the thumb. Or alternatively put mittens on her hands. Works most of the time.
Best of luck with your kid and God bless.

I don't know how you can fix it, any different from what everyone else is mentioning, but I thought I would mention that babies naturally want something to suck on. A 15 month year old would traditionally still be breastfed, in our society we usually don't breastfeed that long, and thumb-sucking often becomes a substitute for some children.

my son started doing that before birth- i have a picture from my ultrasounds with his fingers in his mouth... when he got to an appropriate age (14 months is when we started this...) i first tried a binkie for them to suck on, to stop him from using his fingers (it can cause warts), then slowly we started adding a tiny bit of tabasco sauce to the binkie, then a little bit more, slowly up to almost a half drop and he stopped using the binkie too, and because he was on the binkie for almost a full month, he totally dropped the finger sucking habit and to this day will not touch a binkie!!

Thumb sucking can be a really bad problem, my parents tried many things with me, till eventually, at the age of twelve they stopped it. Try putting a bandaid on her thumb and putting vinigar on it. If that doesnt work, try something she hates the taste of on the bandaid. Hope things work out for you.

Apply non poisonous but tasting bitter cream so that she hesitates to keep her thumb in her mouth.2. give her favorite toy in her hand when she is about to sleep and divert her mind towards the doll from the thumb.

My mom used to put tobasco sauce on my thumbs to get me to stop sucking them. It worked as a child, but I grew up absolutely loving spicey things. I doubt they are related tough.
Good Luck
