Depends on the state, but the basic procedure is to get a Petition for Change of Name form from the county clerk's office, fill it out, and file it. There will be a fee. You may have to publish a legal notice in the newspaper, and probably go before a judge, so that anyone who objects to your doing so may be heard. Once it is granted (ordinarily routine), you get to send notices to all your debtors and creditors, and get a new driver's license and probably a new Social Security card.

Hi Dandelion,
changing your name legally is relatively easy and quick.
I don't know which country you reside in, if it is the UK, all you need to do is go to a lawyer (solicitor) and 'prove' who you are now (birth certificates, driving licence, etc.) and apply for a change of name by 'deed poll'.
The solicitor will check that your antecedents are all in order and will draw up a series of copies of the deed poll document so you can then start using your new chosen name.
The deed poll document can be used to apply for new documents such as driving licence, social security number, etc. so that your new identity will be totally legal.
The solicitor will have to be satisfied that the name change is not for any illegal purpose, such as debt avoidance, etc. before the changes will come into effect.
In the UK it is not necessary to apply for a deed poll change, anyone can call themselves by any surname they wish, without penalty, providing the 'non-illegal purpose' criteria is met.
Getting driving licences and social security credits, etc. will not happen if this method is chosen.
In the USA a similar application, through a lawyer can be made (I think it has the same name) with similar conditions applying.
Hope this helps,

All names are to be changed at the probate court in your county or district. It does't matter how complicated the name is only how complicated it was that your new name came about. It generally cost $75.00 to $125.00 and takes 4 to 6 weeks. by the time you receive your papers.

It's not a big deal. Just go down to city hall, and pick up the same change forms. You have to pay $40 or something, but it depends on what state you live in! Have fun!
