I would have to say Dion Phenauf, he's new to the leauge, and has out performed lots of the other Defence Man out there. Most people are just rushing to the NHL Website and looking at the +/- and see Lindstrom at the top so they pick him. Dion has got more shots and better scoring percentage, more goals than Lindstrom. More Powerplay Goals, More Winning Goals, blocks more. He beat almost all, if not all of the other defenceman last season in all of those categories, yet wasn't considered because he was young, and if you ask me, plays for a Canadian City, so they obviously try and sell the game to Americans, and pick a player on an American Team.

This season Nick Lidstrom is a runaway frontrunner. He continues to dominate at both ends of the ice and currently leads the league in +/-. Not bad for a 36 year old that still plays 25 minutes a night against the other teams best players. This may be his best season ever given the lack of star power on the Wings (compared to the past 10-12 years). It is amazing to watch him control the other teams offense without hardly ever hitting anyone, he reads the ice so well there are no passing lanes open when he is in the area. There are some other great defensemen but right now he is clearly the best in the game and is playing at an incredibly high level this season.

This is a subject that I feel has gotten out of hand from a long time ago.
This trophy is SUPPOSED to represent the NHL's top "defenceman" and usually always goes to the "defenceman" tah has the most goals and assists.
Since when did being a great defenceman have to do with how many goals you score rather than how many goals you help keep out of your own net?
This has irked me a loooong time. Ever since Bobby Orr changed the term 'defence'. And HEY! That's got nothing to do with the fact that Bobby was one of the top 5 hockey players I ever saw play!
BUT, I remember guys like Sylvain Lefebvre and Brian Glennie and Guy Lapointe and ton of other excellent blueliners being overlooked because they just didn't score a lot.
THEY were "DEFENCEMEN"!
They should have a trophy for best offensive as well as best defensive defenseman in my opinion.
They're call 'defense'men, remember?
I think Sergei Gonchar has been looked over a long time but that's jus one of many I like. Thomas Kaberle and Brian McCabe are good too, but I'm just one of those biased Leaf fans.

I hate the pink Wings! possibly Lidstrom, he has deserved to win it the most suitable ten years. i imagine they offer it to some different person basically to split his streak. The very last human being that gained it over Lidstrom and must have grow to be Blake a lengthy a time in the past. Pronger is solid-no longer elite. Boucher is having an effective season-if he maintains it next 3 hundred and sixty 5 days he will draw more beneficial interest. besides the undeniable fact that the Norris is fairly only a advantages for the optimal scoring defensemen.

while chris pronger and scott niedermayer are both having excellent years despite injury, the fact that they are teammates will work against them (it being easier to produce when you have a norris quality guy playing beside you).
there are several players that deserve consideration for their scoring, including sheldon souray, sergei gonchar, tomas kaberle and dan boyle. however, the habs and leafs aren't high enough in the standings to lend significance to souray and kaberle's efforts, while gonchar just doesn't play enough defence and boyle is somewhat off the radar being in tampa.
phillipe bouche is having an excellent season in dallas and should be a finalist for the award. dion phaneuf is emerging in calgary but is a year or two away from serious consideration.
for my money, the norris goes to niklas lidstrom. he leads all defensemen in scoring and the league in plus/minus and he has taken over the C from stevie y and kept a less stellar cast of red wings in the hunt for the league's best record. what more do you need to do to be considered the best?
ps (in rebuttal to the first answer)
a) the reason that the top scoring defensemen always win the award is because they impact the game more. they play at both ends of the ice and thus distinguish themselves from the average. every defencemen is supposed to play sound defence, which brings me to...
b) how can you whine about defensive defensemen not getting any press and then push sergei gonchar for the norris. his d is almost nonexistent and the only reason he is only a minus 2 this year is that sid the kid, evgeni malkin and jordan staahl are lighting it up so much it's almost impossible to be a minus.

Nicklas Lidstrom 14 pims shows how he has adapted to playing the new NHL without haveing to clutch and grab like the old NHL. Plus tops in +/- and throwing in a few points doesn't hurt either.

Sheldon Souray? How can you consider a -13 player for best anything?
Lidstrom gets the nod over Niedermayer and Pronger.
